Modern toplumun en çok tartışılan konularından biri olan sürdürülebilirlik, hem akademik çevre hem de günlük yaşam üzerinde geniş bir etki alanına sahip. Mimarlık endüstrisinin de 20. yüzyılın son çeyreğinden bu yana ilgisiz kalamadığı kavramlardan biri. Son zamanlarda mimari koruma, sürdürülebilirliğin küresel hedeflerindeki rolü ve katkısı açısından da sorgulanmaktadır. Bu noktada, somutlaştırılmış ve operasyonel enerji gibi diğer ilgili kavramlar, tarihi binaların yeniden kullanımının yeni inşaatlara göre avantajlarını veya dezavantajlarını belirledikleri için kilit faktörler olarak görünmektedir. Bu makale, söz konusu kavramlar ile mimari koruma arasında kurulan teorik bağı tartışarak, bu birlikteliğin bu disiplin üzerindeki etkilerini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Uygulamada mimari koruma ilkeleriyle çelişen bazı sorunlu alanların altı çizilecektir. Mimarlık endüstrisini sürdürülebilir bir geleceğe yönlendirmek için öne çıkan araçlar olarak yeşil bina sertifikasyonlarının bazı örnekleri bu çatışmayı belirginleştirmek için tanıtılacaktır.
Abstract
Sustainability, as one of the most-discussed issues of the modern society, has a wide range of effects both on academic environment and daily life. It is one of these concepts that architecture industry couldn’t be unconcerned with since the last quarter of the 20th century. Lately, the architectural preservation is also in question in terms of its role and contribution to the global objectives of sustainability. Herein, other related concepts such as embodied and operational energy seems to be the key factors since they determine the advantages or disadvantages of the reuse of historical buildings over new constructions. This paper discusses the theoretical bond that has been established between mentioned concepts and architectural preservation, in order to reveal the effects arising from this coexistence on this discipline. Some problematic areas in practice, conflicting with the principles of architectural preservation will be underlined. As prominent tools to direct the architecture industry towards sustainable future, some examples of green building certifications will be introduced to crystallize this conflict.
